"Are deeply saddened, lay flowers on grave from us" (Telegram from Mathilde and Arnold Schönberg to Ottilie Blumauer Schönberg, 14 October 1921). On October 12, 1921, Schönberg's mother Pauline died in Berlin. In the days that followed, he received letters of condolence from close friends and companions, for example from his former student Heinrich Jalowetz: "It is with deepest regret that I have learned of the death of your mother. I know how hard such a loss hits everyone and do not need to assure you of my heartfelt sympathy in this case. For, since words reveal their complete inadequacy here, silence seems most appropriate to me, especially toward you."
